-
In this report, we provide an overview of the microeconomic aspects of Oman's fishing and aquaculture industry with a primary focus on Food Development Oman (FDO), as a major player in the sector. The Omani fisheries sector is characterized by an oligopoly-to-monopoly type of market structure and is comprised of a combination of artisanal small-scale fishing and the industrial aquaculture (farming or ranching of fish) sub-sector that is developing rapidly.

This study examines various components of the fisheries industry in Oman including market structure, supply and demand factors, and elasticity of fish prices as well as the role of governmental support in terms of subsidization and regulation.

The main findings of this report indicate that domestic fish supply is extremely seasonal and geographically dispersed but that demand for traditional fish such as sardines and kingfish is very inelastic for most Omani consumers. In addition to receiving support from the government and being vertically integrated, Food Development Oman (FDO) faces a number of obstacles including the costs associated with modernizing the fleet, inadequate cold-chain infrastructure, and increased competition from imported products.

The report finishes with three evidence-based policy recommendations directed to regulators, sector planners, and managers at the firm level that will facilitate improved market efficiency and long-term viability.
