Head in frontal view (Fig. 1C) broadening at eye level, frons weakly impressed, bearing few setae,

vertex weakly raised above frons. Head in lateral view (Fig. 1B) with the side from the mandible to below the eye, rectangular (allowing for reception of antennae), flat to weakly impressed in apical area near antennae; head broadening at eye level. Antennae inserted below and in front of eye; scape 2 times longer than broad at broadest width at level of attachment, roughly wedge shaped, bearing few elongate setae. Submentum roughly cordate in shape, separated from submental suture at mid length where suture forming a cleft; maxillary palps 3-segmented (combined basal two segments shorter than apical), stout, obliquely conical; labium roughly quadrate in shape broader at apical margin than origin; labial palps 3-segmented, basal segments not fused (elongate, slightly shorter than apical two combined), elongate coarse setae extending from deep punctures present adjacent to mouthparts between level of submentum to episomal margin (Fig. 2C). Pronotum in dorsal view (Fig. 1A, 3A) about 1.2 times longer than broad, lateral margins straight; medial sulcus extending 1/3 pronotal length from posterior margin; both sexes bearing large nearly triangular patches of punctures; in lateral view (Fig. 1B) femoral grooves shallow, apical margin medially weakly upcurved. Elytra in dorsal view (Fig. 1A, 3A) about 3.5 times longer than broad; interstriae 1 impressed for entire length; interstriae 3–5 with impressed areas present in proximal 1/4 of elytra, in lateral view (Fig. 1A); lateral margin of elytra distally flanged (Fig. 2E), apical flange bearing a row of serrations to declivity, apically infected inward to declivity in distal 1/3, covering ventral flange in lateral view (Fig. 1B); ventral flange bearing a short, pointed spine at level of interstriae; bearing tiny granules in between flanges (Fig. 2E); posterior margin of elytra (Fig. 1A, B, 2E) asymmetrically armed with small, short dentations. Abdominal ventrites rising dorsally to meet the posterior margin of elytra; ventrites 2 and 3 raised above the other ventrites, and bearing conical spines near lateral margins (spines of ventrite 2 proximally closer than those of ventrite 3); abdominal ventrite 5 medially concave (Fig. 2B). Procoxae contiguous. Protibia armed by two complete transverse ridges, and a few incomplete ridges, with some apical granulations, row of dentation extending from ventral margin up outer margin; protibia bearing a lateral spine at tarsal attachment, a subapical ridge present above spine.

Female. Similar to male except: Body 5.6 mm (based on one paratype) in length. Frons in frontal view (Fig. 3C) broad, subtriangular, deeply concave, bordered by elongate dense gold setae obscuring concavity; apical margin of concavity near vertex concavely impressed in dorsal view (Fig. 3A). Antennae inserted just below eye level; scape extending to apical margin of mandibles, elongate, lachrymiform in shape, broadening distally, three times as long as broadest width, apical margin bearing elongate gold setae which sits above the frons; funicle extending from apical 1/4. In dorsal view (Fig. 3A) apical margin of elytral disc weakly rounded, with raised serpentine carina on dorsal side between interstriae 1–6; in lateral view (Fig. 3B) distal 1/4 inflected to declivity, flanged, dorsal margin serrate. Apical margin of elytral declivity from dorsal view (Fig. 3A) straight, bearing short marginally placed tumescences at interstriae 5; declivital face short, with short spines present on lateral margins by interstriae 3. Spines on abdominal ventrite 3 smaller than those of male; spines of ventrite 2 reduced to small tumescences.

Remarks. Schedl (1972b) and Schedl (1978) recorded that the holotype and allotype were sent to the Australian National Insect Collection (ANIC). We located the holotype at NHMW, but the allotype was not present. The allotype is also not present in ANIC and is presumed missing (James Bickerstaff, pers. comm.). Schedl (1972b) also reported paratypes were deposited in the Department of Forests, Bulolo Papua New Guinea, but we were unable to confirm their presence (J.H. pers. obs.). Schedl (1978) also stated that two males and two females were in Schedl Collection which we can confirm (N.N.L., pers. obs.). Neither Schedl (1972b, 1978) state how many paratypes were allegedly sent to the Department of Forests, Bulolo.

Plant associations. Uncertain. The collection information of the holotype label and Schedl (1972b) indicate that the holotype was collected from “freshly fallen ‘white wood’”, probably referring to Endospermum medullosum (Euphorbiaceae) which has the common name of Whitewood (Thomson 2006). Most platypodines are host taxon generalists and instead specialize on a certain stage of tree death and decay (Hulcr et al. 2007).

Distribution. Bougainville Island, Autonomous Region of Bougainville, Papua New Guinea.

Type material examined. HOLOTYPE: In freshly fallen / white wood // ♂ // Bougainville Dist. / Tonolei / 9.V.1969 / B.
