contents We define Seshadri constants for Higgs bundles on smooth projective varieties over algebraically closed fields of characteristic zero. This definition is inspired by and analogous to the notion of Seshadri constants for ordinary vector bundles. We prove a series of properties of Higgs Seshadri constants which are analogous to the corresponding properties in the case of ordinary Seshadri constants. In particular, we prove a Seshadri criterion for Higgs ampleness and prove that Higgs Seshadri constants can be computed by restriction to curves.
