Curriculum Documentation Graduate Study Information Processing Information Science Information Systems Information Theory Library Education Man Machine Systems Operations Research Professional Education Systems Analysis THIS REPORT SYNTHESIZES FOUR YEARS WORK AND THOUGHT AIMED AT DESIGNING AND TESTING A SERIES OF COURSE SYLLABI FOR STUDY IN THE BASIC AREAS OF THE INFORMATION SCIENCES. THE RESULTS OF THE WORK ARE PRESENTED AS AN ARRAY OF COURSES IN FIVE GENERAL AREAS--(1) INFORMATION SYSTEM ANALYSIS, INCLUDING STUDY OF SPECIFIC SYSTEM PROBLEMS OF TECHNIQUES OF MEASUREMENT AND DATA COLLECTION, AND OF GENERALIZED MODELS AND THEORIES, (2) ECOLOGY OF INFORMATION SYSTEMS, INCLUDING THE SOCIAL CONTEXTS AND SOCIAL PROCESSING OF INFORMATION, (3) INFORMATION MEDIA, INCLUDING LANGUAGES USED, THE SHAPE AND CONTENT OF A MESSAGE, THE INTERNAL ORGANIZATION OF A MESSAGE, AND ITS DISTRIBUTION AND DISSEMINATION, (4) ORGANIZATION OF INFORMATION, AND (5) MAN-SYSTEM INTERFACE, WHICH IS THE RANGE OF INTERACTIONS BETWEEN THE USER AND WHATEVER FACE THE SYSTEM TURNS TOWARD HIM. THE CONTENT OF THE SUGGESTED COURSES ARE FELT TO BE BASIC TO CURRICULA ON THE GRADUATE LEVEL IN INFORMATION SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY. SINCE NO ONE STUDENT, NOR SCHOOL, COULD UNDERTAKE EXCELLENCE IN ALL THE AREAS, VARIOUS COMBINATIONS ARE SUGGESTED WHICH REFLECT THE NEEDS OF DIFFERENT EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES. THE AREAS OF SYSTEMS DESIGN, ANALYSIS, EVALUATION, AND DEVELOPMENT ARE RECOMMENDED SUBJECTS FOR MAJOR CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS. A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF ALL ITEMS WRITTEN UNDER THE GRANT AND THE LECTURE-SEMINARS GIVEN UNDER IT IS INCLUDED.
