| contents | The Relationship of Academic Success and Selected Other Factors to Student Use of Library Materials at College of the Desert. Hostrop, Richard Winfred Academic Achievement Doctoral Dissertations Grades (Scholastic) Libraries Library Circulation Student Characteristics Two Year Colleges This study found that, although some statistically-significant personal characteristics of students were associated with the use of library resources, they played only a minor role in the quantitive use of the materials. Instructors, in assigning term papers and speeches, provided the main impetus to student use of the library. Fewer than 5% of the college's 160 courses accounted for over 50% of the circulation, with English and speech courses making the greatest demand. Where use of the library was important in determining the course grade, students with a final grade of A or B were the heaviest borrowers. Where the use of library materials was not so important to the grade, students with a C, D, or F borrowed most. Nearly 19% of all students enrolled did not check out any library material during this investigation period. In only six of the 160 courses, 80% or more of the students withdrew library materials. It was also found that library materials were used less at this college than at senior institutions. The recommendation was made that this study be repeated in other junior colleges to determine library/course indexes as a means of evaluation of academic success, and to collect circulation statistics for library cost analyses.
