De Los Santos, Alfredo Guadalupe, Jr. Librarians Libraries Two Year Colleges This study examined seven factors that affect the adequacy of a junior college library collection: (1) size of enrollment, (2) library funds, (3) type of curriculum, (4) college expenditures per student, (5) time spent on book selection, (6) use of book-selection aids, and (7) the librarian's qualifications. Data were gathered from the Texas Education Agency and six Texas junior colleges. The book collection--not periodicals or other material--was evaluated by (1) circulation records, (2) per student expenditures in the library, (3) sampling of title holdings in three Dewey Decimal classes, and (4) percent of college funds for the library. Enrollment, funds, and kind of curriculum significantly affect the quantity, while the librarian's training, experience, and methods of book selection (time spent, frequency, and use of bibliographic aids) affect the quality of the book collection. Recommendations for further research are: (1) refinement of tools for measuring a library's adequacy, (2) repeat of this study using more libraries, (3) effects of faculty participation on book selection, (4) possible effect of library use on transfer students' success, (5) extent of student use and its effect on academic performance, (6) feasibility of combining the college library with a public library, and (7) extent of cooperation between the college library and other libraries.
