contents PERT as a Management Tool for Educators. Ripley, Kathryn Jane Campus Planning Critical Path Method Planning Sequential Approach Systems Analysis Two Year Colleges Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) is a statistical technique, developed by the U.S. Navy, for analyzing and quantifying uncertainties in sequential or parallel activities essential for completing a project within certain parameters. It focuses management attention on points that require remedial action or tradeoff in time (or other resources) to meet a deadline. The PERT flowcharts picture the interdependence of all elements in a project and the branching of subsequent activities resulting from the completion of a prior step. This paper shows in detail the use of PERT charts in the establishment of Northern Virginia Community College in the brief time between the enabling legislation of October 1966 and the opening of the rental campus in September 1967. Separate charts demonstrate the use of the device in overall planning, acquiring furniture and equipment, organizing the library, and providing food and janitorial services. (HH)
