Long, Fern Adult Literacy Disadvantaged Economically Disadvantaged Functional Literacy Illiteracy Library Extension Library Services Urban Areas In a three-year project which began in 1965, the Cleveland Public Library established three Reading Centers for functionally illiterate adults. The purpose of the Centers was not to teach reading, but to develop already existent reading skills in disadvantaged adults. The staffing process, the establishment of the Centers, the attempts to identify and acquire easy reading materials for adults, and the publications resulting from the project are described in this Final Report. The author concludes that the project was successful in helping adults to improve their reading, to get new and better jobs, and to become better acquainted with the library and its services. The program for the Conference on the Library and the Functionally Illiterate Adult, held in connection with the project in 1966, and some sample publicity fliers for the project are appended. (CC) |
