  • The Human Side of Libraries. Surace, Cecily J. Administrative Principles Employee Attitudes Evaluation Methods Goal Orientation Human Relations Librarians Measurement Objectives Objectives Performance Factors Personnel Evaluation Personnel Policy Special Libraries This paper discusses current trends in personnel management, with emphasis on performance standards and employee evaluation. Advances in personnel management from the scientific management theory to the application of the "human side of enterprise" approach should be reflected in how library managers review personnel and operate their libraries. The work measurement and job description methods for establishing standards and evaluating employees are being discarded in favor of management by objectives. Closely allied to management by objectives is performance appraisal by results, a method of evaluation which involves the employee in a self-motivating and dynamic environment of commitment. Discussion and examples show that this performance appraisal technique is well suited for both personnel and departmental management in special libraries. (JB)
