Listed are the numbers of teachers responding positively and negatively to each of 30 yes-or-no questions, revealing that 46.43% of the respondents had encountered censorship directly or had known of encounters among their fellow teachers. In addition to the numerical data, quotations from respondents in regard to school policies on censorship, to library book selection, and to teacher preparation for handling attempted censorship are given. Books, periodicals, films, and recordings to which there were objections are listed, together with the reasons for and the consequences of the objections. Also reported are books about which teachers anticipated objections which did not arise. Implications of the survey and recommended ways for English departments to meet censorship problems are outlined. (JS) |
