Advisory Committees Conference Reports Data Collection Legislation Libraries Library Planning Library Services Library Standards National Programs Recordkeeping Statistical Data Attended by representatives of American Library Association (ALA) divisions and committees, other national library associations, state library agencies, library schools, and all types of libraries, this conference was held to discuss: (1) the program of the National Center for Educational Statistics (USOE) as it pertains to libraries; (2) the publication "Library Statistics: A Handbook of Concepts, Definitions and Terminology" (ALA, 1966); (3) the formulation of a comprehensive program for the systematic collection of statistics for all types of libraries; (4) standardization of library statistics and definitions, nationally and internationally; (5) data collection needs as they pertain to current legislation; and (6) the impact of library statistics on the development of library standards. The four basic conclusions of the conference were that: (1) the appropriate Federal agencies and the library profession should appoint an official national advisory committee for library statistics, (2) the concept of a national plan is endorsed, with the means of implementation to be clarified, (3) the Handbook is accepted as the basic document from which the profession will derive concepts and programs, and (4) it is necessary for ALA and its divisions to consider conference recommendations and arrive at a consensus as to their validity and priority.
