contents Computer Routines to Read Natural Text with Complex Formats. Graves, Patricia A. And Others Catalogs Computational Linguistics Computer Programs Information Processing Information Retrieval This memorandum describes a set of subroutines for the IBM 7040/44 computers for reading textual material with complex formats and coding conventions--questionnaires, library catalog cards, etc.--from any external medium into the high-speed store of the machine. Different kinds of information in the input are recognized by explicit markers, position on the line or page, or syntactic clues given by other items. Less complex material requires only a portion of the system. Information may be recoded according to the user's conventions before being delivered to his program. The routines may be called from either FORTRAN- or MAP-coded programs. The Memorandum is divided into two parts, the first of which is an introduction to the system as a whole and to the individual programs. The second part (Appendix) is a detailed programmer's guide, giving the information necessary to use the routines. (Author/RM)
