contents Summary Report of the UCLA Biomedical Library Control System for Serials. Fayollat, Jim Luck, Don Automation Bibliographies Book Catalogs Check Lists Computers Information Retrieval Information Storage Information Systems Input Output Medical Libraries Recordkeeping Records (Forms) Serials The purpose of the serials record system is (1) to provide better service to the Library's patrons, (2) to attain a tighter control of existing records, and (3) to serve as a pilot project in the area of automated library record keeping, a recognized crucial area of necessary research in view of the current knowledge explosion. In this system, the Library's serials information has been stored on computer tapes, forming, essentially, a "tape Kardex". The tape is updated weekly by cards prepared by the staff and fed into the IBM 360/75 computer in the Center for the Health Sciences Computing Facility. The system provides a variety of lists, including a listing of the entire serials record of the library, a weekly list of the serial arrivals for the preceding week , a weekly notification of volumes which should be bound, monthly claiming lists, and title lists by subject or other designation. Included in this report are a description of the system, an outline of the essentials of the system and system flowcharts, and input and output samples. (Author/JB)
