Farr, Helen Louise Kuster American Culture Anthropology Cultural Activities Cultural Differences Cultural Education Cultural Interrelationships Culture Disadvantaged English Instruction Teacher Stereotypes Teaching Methods This library study investigated the problems of (1) what anthropological generalizations are of greatest value for English teachers of culturally disadvantaged students, and (2) how these generalizations are particularly relevant for classroom use. The theoretical and empirical research literature was surveyed and relevant sections were abstracted. Points taken up were reasons why English teachers are especially qualified to use anthropological approaches in teaching culturally disadvantaged students, specific suggestions about how these approaches could be used in class, and a possible explanation for the stereotype of the English teacher in American culture. The study concludes that the English teacher, in his dual role as member of a distinct subculture and as an agent of cultural change, will find among anthropological ideas the most valuable to be the concept of culture and the method of systematically making comparative studies of cultures. This knowledge can help the teacher devise realistic goals and effective procedures for teaching English. (Author/LH) |
