Automation Computer Programs Federal Legislation Government Publications Information Processing Information Systems Library Technical Processes Special Libraries This report describes the development of a mechanized file for legislative information at the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) Library. The term "legislation" is taken to mean all government documents originated by the Congress or related to its work. To define the basic requirements for a mechanized system, a detailed study of the existing system was first made. This study involved the evaluation of various functions in the system in terms of importance and in terms of susceptibility to mechanization. In the report the overall organization of AEC and the legislative collection within AEC are both discussed, along with the general requirements for a potential mechanized system. The decision made following the evaluation was that a mechanized system should be designed and implemented. The medium-scale mechanized system that was developed processes data about the legislation received by the AEC Library and provides four classes of output: catalogs, indexes, announcements, and legislative history. Twenty computer programs are required to obtain the desired results. The system is designed so that almost all files and records are maintained on magnetic tape. The system has been run on the computer on a weekly basis since Jan. 8, 1965. (Author/RM) |
