It then outlines a network schematic which incorporates both geographic groupings and specialty groupings of libraries. It defines two kinds of centralized facilities: a processing center and a switching center. The processing center serves the function of producing for wide-scale distribution catalogs of the holdings of groups of libraries. The switching center serves as a directory service, providing both the information and the technology for facilitating communications among libraries. This part of the report concludes with a time-table for network development, covering efforts now underway or soon to be started and those planned for the future. (Author) |
