Four of New Haven's eight branch libraries are designed as library neighborhood centers. The centers are supported by the Ford Foundation, the City of New Haven, the Office of Economic Opportunity, the New Haven Foundation, and Library Services and Construction Act (LSCA) funds. Programs, activities, and staffing at the Centers are discussed in this report. The Centers have concentrated efforts to provide information for six groups of users in their areas: (1) those in financial need, (2) those with consumer problems, (3) tenants, (4) those accused or convicted of a crime, (5) those with medical problems, including alcoholism and drug addiction, and (6) those seeking higher education. Some observations on the Centers are:A.) There is still much apathy and ignorance surrounding the Centers. B.) People-oriented librarians are necessary to ensure success for the project. C.) The multi-agency approach has been beneficial. (Author/CC) |
