Many variables determine the content of what a student learns and also the degree and direction of his personal growth and development. This study sought to examine one facet of the learning environment--the house within a residence hall. The data and observations were part of a larger study, and were obtained from 27 men's residence houses, each house having about 50 members. The House Analysis Survey (HAS) was used to assess inter-hall and house differences. The basic topic investigated in this study was the character and extent of the climate of learning within the residence hall-houses and the relationship of the learning climate to freshman attitudes and academic performance. Among the list of general observations and conclusions were: (1) the characteristics of residence hall groups vary extensively, (2) undertones of non-intellectual behavioral norms exist, (3) houses differ in their climate of learning as perceived by residence, and, (4) the climate of learning has no demonstrable effect on freshman academic performance when the influence of academic ability is removed.
