The study was limited to 5 problem areas that might best be solved through more central and cooperative efforts among institutions--administration, resource sharing, instruction, information science research, and libraries. Part I describes the study, termed Project ISE, and the actions recommended. It was conducted through the production of working papers covering the 5 areas, and subsequent meetings on over 80 campuses to discuss the papers with institutional officials. The results showed that 2 areas--administration and resource sharing--are in critical need of nation-wide, computer based information systems. The major recommendation calls for immediate establishment of a non-profit Institute for Information Systems in Higher Education to undertake programs in these 2 areas. Recommendations are also made for further study in the other areas. Part II contains the final versions of the working papers entitled: "Administrative Information Systems,""The Computer in Instruction,""Information System Resource Sharing,""Research in the Information Sciences," and "The Computer in the Library." The findings and recommendations presented in Part I are treated in great detail in Part II. (DS) |
