It is concluded that unless the storage, transmission, and retrieval of information in library archives is automated, there is no hope of keeping pace with the exponential growth of libraries. Part I explores the problem of determining the relationship of library growth to the growth of those components of civilization that support and use libraries. Part II analyzes cost factors in maintaining and updating card catalogs. It was found that simple situations do not require automation, but that complex ones, which appear unavoidable for most large libraries, demand automation on economic as well as on access grounds.
