Chapter 2 defines the relationship between oral and written language, gives some of the learning theories which apply to reading, and mentions the common approaches to beginning reading. Chapter 3 is devoted to the skills of reading and offers suggestions on skill development. Chapter 4 discusses the use of reading in the various subject matter areas of the curriculum. Chapter 5 describes the reading process in second language learning and the pre-reading skills necessary to success. The nature of bilingualism is explored and some of the interference between speech and print is discussed. Chapter 6 provides another view of reading skill development from the position of the non-native speaker who is acquiring reading skills in English. Chapter 7 points out some of the skills needed in the subject matter areas. Chapter 8 suggests criteria for the selection of materials and techniques in teaching reading in a second language. Chapters 9 and 10 discuss in some detail testing to determine reading achievement, and present conclusions and a rationale for an experimental reading curriculum. (Author/AMM)
