| contents | A Plan for a Wisconsin Library and Information Network: Knowledge Network of Wisconsin. Information Centers Information Networks Information Systems Libraries Library Cooperation Library Networks Library Services A strong library and information network is important to Wisconsin because of the uneven geographic distribution of its population, the dispersion of its university resource centers and heavy concentration of book and other information resources in major cities. This report explores the potential for furthering interlibrary cooperation in Wisconsin by investigating various ways of linking the state's library systems with other information centers into a network. The plan has four main objectives: (1) promote increased sharing of resources by libraries, (2) use modern technology in an appropriate and economical manner to facilitate the distribution of information, (3) equalize the availability of library materials, and (4) create a comprehensive base of library and information materials with a minimum of duplication and processing. The network proposed is constructed of groups of libraries and information centers operating as a consortium without limitation on the nature of their local jurisdictions. The report is divided into three main sections: (1) network philosophy and concept, (2) the library environment in Wisconsin, and (3) development and program plan for a Wisconsin Library and Information Network.
