| contents | The Los Angeles City College Mobile Advisement Center: A Study of Its Operation. Dyste, Ron Career Counseling Educational Counseling Experimental Programs Guidance Centers Mobile Educational Services Paraprofessional Personnel Services Two Year Colleges Los Angeles City College in 1969-70 successfully conducted an experimental study on the Mobile Advisement Center (MAC) as an effective means of enhancing the extent and quality of information on the college reaching low-income communities. MAC is housed in a modified mobile home, 28 feet long and eight feet wide, containing four counseling cubicles, lounge, small library, and bath. The author discusses the background, implementation, findings, and future of the program. MAC's effectiveness is directly proportional to: (1) geographical area covered by: MAC; (2) amount of time MAC is in a given area; (3) number and quality of personnel working on MAC; (4) frequency of visits to each designated target community; and (5) extent of dissemination to the residents of information that could come only from a program like MAC. MAC diminishes dependency on chance and word-of-mouth communication and brings the college catalog to the community. Counseling is available to those who otherwise would not have the opportunity to discuss educational and vocational goals. MAC provides an important paraprofessional career service to those who man it. Several recommendations were made: (1) MAC and its funding should be continued and expanded into other service areas; (2) program details should be reviewed; (3) MAC should be integrated into other campus activities; and (4) it should communicate with similar out-reach agencies.
