- An Analysis of the Status of Geography Education in the Intermediate Grades in a Tri-State Regional Area. Veltkamp, James J. Administrator Evaluation Curriculum Evaluation Educational Research Educational Trends Elementary School Curriculum Geography Instruction Intermediate Grades Program Effectiveness Program Evaluation Social Studies Teacher Evaluation It was the purpose of this study to find answers to the following questions: 1) To what extent have teachers and administrators been trained to teach and give guidance in geography education? 2) How is geography education defined? 3) Do schools have a statement of philosophy or written objectives? 4) How important do administrators and teachers consider geography to be today? 5) How much time is spent teaching? 6) What is the content and scope of geography in these grades? 7) What approaches are used in teaching? 8) What variety of media is used? 9) Are significant educational differences relative to the size of the school? 10) To what extent are administrators and teachers concerned about the improvement of instruction? The study consisted of a random sampling of thirty-one schools out of a total population of 112 school systems. 131 teachers and 31 administrators cooperated. A written questionnaire for teachers, and a depth interview guide and questionnaire for personal interviews with administrators were used. Some of the salient generalizations were: 1) There is a serious concern for geography education; 2) Teachers are not as well prepared as they should be; 3) In most instances geography is taught with the fused social studies; 4) Small schools tend to spend less time; 5) The scope and content did not vary significantly; and, 6) A wider variety of media is used recently emphasizing projection media and library books.
