  • Statistics of Public Libraries Serving Communities with at Least 25,000 Inhabitants, 1965. Administration Costs Librarians Library Circulation Library Collections Personnel Public Libraries Questionnaires Salaries Statistical Data The series of selected statistical presentations of public library management data that originated in the Office of Education in 1945 is continued in this report. The data reported were collected with a questionnaire addressed to the 1,178 public libraries which serve areas having at least 25,000 inhabitants. The five tables of data include summary data for public library systems by population size group, summary data for each state and detailed information for each public library or library system, alphabetically, by state. Among the facts gathered from the data were: that public libraries were seriously affected by a shortage of professional librarians, professional staff positions increased, 66 percent of the total expenditures were spent for wages and salaries, total operating expenditures per capita increased to $2.72 in 1965, and library collections and circulation made steady gains in the period 1960 to 1965. The questionnaire form is appended. (AB)
