Booth, Dave And Others Affective Objectives African Culture African History Area Studies Black History Black Studies Cross Cultural Studies Elementary Education Geography Human Living Inquiry Interdisciplinary Approach Language Arts Map Skills Resource Materials Social Studies Units of Study The theme of this unit of study for elementary grades is Africa: Past, Present, and Future. A sample outline is given suggesting topics to be explored as well as a list of introductory student activities. A problem solving approach is used and individual student research is encouraged. Some major historical events, important leaders, and significant concepts are briefly summarized. The objectives and understandings to be developed through this study are: 1) that customs and traditions are handed down from generation to generation in all societies; 2) that events have roots in the past; 3) human beings over the world are much more alike than different; 4) every society must develop its own system of values to achieve its goals; 5) cultural contributions are not the monopoly of any ethnic group; 6) increased appreciation of the cultural heritage of Africa; and, 7) a basic study of geography. A bibliography of unit materials includes: 1) printed resources, 2) audiovisual aids, 3) study questions to correlate with specific Canadian School Broadcast tapes, and 4) a student exercise sheet for literature sources in the school library.
