The function of the Division is to safeguard, help acquire, classify and catalog, and make useful the collections of manuscripts in its possessions. To accomplish this the Division maintains a reading room and reference service, and prepares bibliographies, guides, calendars, indexes, and publications. The second paper is concerned with the Presidential Papers Index Series of the Library of Congress Manuscript Division. The papers of twenty-three presidents from George Washington to Calvin Coolidge are part of the Manuscript Division. The size and content of each of the Presidential papers Indexes is described.
