Cooper, William Allied Health Occupations Education Audiovisual Instruction Educational Television Instructional Films Lifelong Learning Medical Education Professional Continuing Education The material presented here is the result of a review of the Technical Development Plan of the National Library of Medicine, made with the object of describing the role of audiovisual materials in medical education, research and service, and particularly in the continuing education of physicians and allied health personnel. A historical background of the use of audiovisual materials in medical and health professional education is given. The benefits and problems of resource sharing with other institutional producers of audiovisual materials are identified, and the primary users and uses of audiovisual material in health science education, the facilities, equipment, and capabilities required for extended use of these materials are described. The potential role of the Biomedical Communications Network is discussed and a description of a typical learning resource center in a medical school is provided. (JY)
