Attitudes Career Opportunities Curriculum Development Educational Change Educational Research Environmental Education Experimental Curriculum High School Students Oceanography Questionnaires Relevance (Education) The purpose of the project was to learn whether any measurable changes in student attitudes can be detected when the school curriculum is made more relevant to the school's physical environment. The scope of the study was to orient the curriculum in all academic departments towards oceanology and then determine by subjective opinions of the faculty and by a pre and post informational and attitudinal questionnaire whether there was any overall change in the school. The results were that (1) student interest in an oceanology section of the library was especially high; (2) the student questionnaire indicated no significant changes in attitudes; and (3) the academic department heads were divided as to whether they were willing to cooperate with the project by altering their present curriculum. The project did create an interest in the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School. It is recommended that the concept of orienting a school curriculum to oceanology be validated in another secondary school located near the ocean. (Author)
