Heinich, Robert Conferences Data Processing Information Networks Library Cooperation Library Networks Social Influences New technologies of information handling are going to produce fundamental changes in the social structure. If we accept the statement that the book "upset the educational monopoly of the Church," we inevitably wonder what monopolies may tumble in the electronic wake of the computer. We are not dealing with a simple difference of degree but, rather a difference of kind. It is always tempting to try to gain reassurance by pointing out similarities between an innovation and our accustomed way of doing things, but it is false reassurance when we are faced with a change in kind and still act as though we were in complete continuity with the past. The major contribution to the history and philosophy of science made in the last ten years is that science is not an unbroken, steady accumulation of knowledge that continuously adds to our understanding of natural phenomena.
