Bibliographies History Medical Libraries National Libraries The chronological development of the National Library of Medicine is traced from 1836 through 1970. The years of major accomplishments are especially noted. For example: the first issue of "Index Medicus" was published in 1879; in 1913 Fielding H. Garrison published "An Introduction to the History of Medicine;" the first meeting of the Association of Honorary Consultants to the Army Medical Library was held in 1944; in 1956 (March 13,), Senator Lister Hill and Senator John F. Kennedy submitted to Congress Bill S.3430; "to promote the progress of medicine and to advance the national health and welfare by creating a National Library of Medicine;" the library began Research and Development Program in 1967; and in 1970 a new MEDLARS publication, "Abridged Index Medicus" was published to serve the smaller hospital libraries and individual practitioners. This history is followed by a selected bibliography of materials concerning the National Library of Medicine. (Author/NH) |
