It helps in controlling the in-coming serials, claiming the not-received and missing issues, and answering inquiries regarding the current holdings of the library. This manual briefly describes the 3x5 file card system of recording serials, defines the various types of serial publications, and then provides a complete discussion on the use of the Kardex method. The various Kardex processes and notations discussed here are: date stamp, call number, plastic indicators, missing issue slips, duplicates, titles on display, removal from the reading area, reprints, separately cataloged items, titles not in the Kardex, invoicing, withdrawal of cards, filing, back issues, damaged journals, errata and information sheets, and notes. Included are several examples of sample forms used in the process of recording serials. (SJ)
