Costs Information Retrieval Information Storage Information Systems Library Automation Library Collections Models Use Studies It is the purpose of this study to provide fresh insight into the nature of library problems by systematically studying the question of size in various information contexts. In the introduction, the role that size plays from the user's point of view is illustrated. In the following sections, a study of the card catalogue, the classification system and various other access mechanisms are presented. Their size characteristics are determined and the impact of these considerations on the creation and use of access mechanisms is shown. The several chapters that follow are devoted to the more extensive statistical and mathematical justifications necessary to provide a solid base for future study improvement, and design of information access systems.
