Davis, Donald G., Jr. Comparative Analysis Librarians Library Associations Medical Associations Organization Physicians Professional Associations The American Medical Association and the American Library Association are comparatively studied in this essay which emphasizes organizational structure. The chief characteristics of professional associations are briefly reviewed and the three primary problem areas relating to organizational structure--participation of the membership, role of the leadership, and segmentation of the profession--are closely examined. The historical development of the associations' organizational structures is traced and their current structures are described in some detail. Several selective features of the two associations which give insight into their operation are analyzed and the responses to the three problem areas are discussed. The study results indicate the following: American Medical Association has been a medium through which the goals of the profession have been voiced. These goals have shaped the organizational structure which has enabled the profession to deal successfully with the three problem areas discussed. On the other hand, the American Library Association has not focused on clearly defined goals and the organizational structure has not encouraged concerted action toward professional objectives. The three problems areas have been met with varying success. (Author/NH) |
