- Program on Application of Communications Satellites to Educational Development. Progress Report. Morgan, R. P. Singh, J. P. Communications Satellites Computer Assisted Instruction Copyrights Educational Economics Educational Radio Educational Technology Educational Television Electromechanical Technology Library Networks Public Television Telecommunications An interdisciplinary program is exploring the educational services which communications satellites may help provide and the synthesis of systems for delivering these services in the United States. From November 1970 to November 1971 substantial progress was made in three primary program categories: needs analysis, communications technology studies, and systems synthesis. In the area of needs analysis, studies of the following were completed: communications media and educational technology, telecommunication and computer-based instruction, educational computer services and computer communications, instructional television utilization and electronic educational dissemination services, and a projected budget for educational technology for 1975 and 1985. Studies on communications technology included work on transmission schemes for still picture television, on the use of Gunn effect devices as amplifiers and as switching elements, and on the design of a television receiver front end for direct satellite reception at 12 Ghz. In the area of system synthesis, a study of organizational and administrative aspects of a large-scale instructional satellite system to be used with schools outlined requirements for a system with demand and scheduled access capability and an analysis of instructional television included cost estimates for ground distribution facilities.
