contents A Survey of Automated Activities in the Libraries of Mexico, Central America and South America; Volume 4, World Survey Series. Patrinostro, Frank S., Comp. Sanders, Nancy P., Ed. Foreign Countries Libraries Library Automation Library Services Library Surveys Program Descriptions The intent of this fourth volume of the "Survey of Automated Activities in the Libraries of the World" is to identify and describe computer-based library projects in the Latin American countries. Information was drawn from survey questionnaires sent to individual libraries. However, few of the South American libraries responded, and as a result the majority of these project descriptions are based on literature citations obtained from sources other than the questionnaires. The brevity of the description makes it difficult to determine the type or extent of the project. The lack of standardization of library terminology had made it hazardous in previous surveys to specifically classify a particular project. Detailed information was available, however, in the form of conference proceedings from various Latin American meetings. These reports have been appended both in the original Spanish or Portuguese version and in English translation. Though often very basic and non-technical in nature, they provide a feeling for the state of the art in Latin America, as well as descriptions of automation experiments. A majority of the projects are under study, well over one-half of the projects are not fully operative. The project descriptions are also presented in two languages. (Author/SJ)
