Elizabeth Library Cooperation Library Role Library Services Public Libraries Resource Centers School Libraries Students In Massachusetts municipalities there exists the need to develop at the policy-making, fiscal and administrative levels, an awareness, understanding and knowledge of the functions, objectives and roles of both the public library and the school media program in relation to children and young adults. To this end there should be joint administrative and fiscal planning involving boards of trustees, directors of public libraries, school administrators, superintendents and school committees. Total library media service to the young people of the community presupposes effective working relationships at a decision-making level for both resource centers. The functions of each library program are clearly distinct in the educational scheme of every municipality. Neither can presently provide nor should attempt to provide the services of the other. The local public library cannot hope to provide the necessary materials either in the proximity or the perspective which is required of a good education program. At the same time a school library/media cannot hope to provide the kind of service which may be found at the local public library. Both resource centers should continue to service children fulfilling their related but distinct roles. (Author) |
