Zapol, Nikki Cable Television Copyrights Educational Policy Educational Technology Facsimile Transmission Federal Legislation Libraries Library Automation Publishing Industry Telecommunications Universities Thus far, there is little statistical evidence to show that new technologies have had an appreciable impact on the amount of learning that takes place in schools throughout the country. In order to find some of the causes of this lack and to point out policy questions in this area, the author surveys several issues in the field of new information media. He discusses the impact of the new technologies on the universities, and he likens the development of cable television to the founding of the postal service. He examines some of the issues in publishing, noting the lessons to be learned from the development of the publishing industry and tracing the effects of new technologies on the industry. In dealing with the library crisis, he notes that the access to adequate storage and distribution techniques of both print and non-print media will have to be improved if libraries are to thrive. Personal contributions to the "social memory", he notes, are more limited by the new technologies than they were by the advent of pencil and paper. The copyright problems arising from facsimile transmission, dry copying techniques, and cable television are examined in some detail. (JY) |
