Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia were chosen on the basis of their geographical proximity to North Carolina and the wealth of materials on or about black people that were already available in some of their libraries. The librarians of 6 institutions in the representative states conducted the state searches for materials.
