Federal Government Government Libraries Investigations Library Services Special Libraries In April 1971, the chairman of the Subcommittee on Census and Statistics requested that the General Accounting Office (GAO) conduct a management-type review of the adequacy of services furnished by the Presidential libraries. The assignment called for an examination of: (1) the adequacy of the libraries' systems for cataloging materials and making them available to users, (2) the policy and management direction provided by the libraries, (3) the adequacy of services furnished to scholars and researchers by library staffs, and (4) the publicity given to library contents and research performed by library employees. The review was performed at the F. D. Roosevelt, H. S. Truman and D. D. Eisenhower libraries. The GAO report was submitted to the subcommittee on October 26, 1971. This document contains the background of the issue leading to the investigation, the GAO report and other pertinent material, and the subcommittee's findings and recommendations. (Author/SJ)
