contents A Survey and Analysis of Reading Habits and Library Use Patterns of the Central City Residents of Salt Lake City, Utah. Freebairn, Mark R. Palmer, Rita Library Planning Library Surveys Public Libraries Questionnaires Reading Habits Social Influences Use Studies The purpose of this study was to survey and analyze two census tracts of Salt Lake City proper, a residential area frequently referred to as Central City. This study was commissioned by Richard J. Rademacher, Director, Salt Lake City Public Library. A questionnaire was formulated through an analysis of other surveys at the conclusion of an extensive literature search. The questionnaires were randomly distributed to 250 residents of Central City. Of the total questionnaires distributed, 243 were retrieved, giving a total response of 98 per cent. The data were analyzed in several ways--cumulative comparisons, internal comparisons and national and local comparisons of similar surveys. Conclusions were made concerning social factors, reading patterns, and library use. Constructive suggestions were made which could be used as guidelines in future planning activities for the Central City area. Areas for further studies are suggested in order to give this survey more depth and meaning. Additional research is necessary in order to develop effective means of increasing public awareness and appreciation of the benefits to be obtained through the use of the library. (Author)
