Parker, Lorne Arnold Adult Education Listening Listening Comprehension Listening Comprehension Tests Professional Continuing Education Telephone Instruction Testing This study compares the effects of a compressed speech program transmitted via the Educational Telephone Network (ETN) system on various professional adult groups throughout Wisconsin with that of a program transmitted at normal speech. It is concerned with the noise source, receiver and destination aspects of the Shannon Weaver communication model; and the relationship of compressed speech lectures transmitted via the ETN system are discussed using the Shannon-Weaver theory. A total of 206 students enrolled in two continuing educational programs, Library Science and Venereal Disease and Society, are used. Each lecture was taped twice. The normal version of the tape was recorded at approximately 125 wpm. and the compressed version was recorded at 275 wpm. Conclusions are listed. (Author/NF) |
