contents World Guide to Library Schools and Training Courses in Documentation. Books Documentation Education Educational Programs Guides Higher Education Information Science Information Scientists Librarians Library Education Library Schools Library Science The successful development of documentation and library services depends on the availability of sufficient qualified personnel. Unesco has therefore given high priority in its program to the question of professional training and will assist its member states in their efforts to train sufficient numbers of documentalists and librarians. To this end, particular attention is paid to education of librarians and documentalists at the university level, and to institutions willing to accept foreign students. This guide contains information on 306 schools and other institutions in 60 countries offering higher education in documentation and librarianship. For countries where education in this field is not yet fully developed, courses at a lower level or temporary courses are included. A list of the main subjects taught in each school has been included whenever possible as being of general interest and giving some indication of the scope of the program of study. It should be noted, however, that most schools, particularly in the USA, encourage students to enroll in a degree program as a whole and not just in selected courses. In addition to the theoretical training, nearly all the schools listed include extensive practical work and seminars in their programs. (Author/NH)
