contents Vocabulary Control for Information Retrieval. Lancaster, F. W. Classification Codification Computers Indexes Indexing Information Retrieval Information Science Information Systems Library Science Online Systems Relevance (Information Retrieval) Search Strategies Thesauri Vocabulary This book deals with properties of vocabularies for indexing and searching document collections; the construction, organization, display, and maintenance of these vocabularies; and the vocabulary as a factor affecting the performance of retrieval systems. Most of the text is concerned with vocabularies for post-coordinate retrieval systems, with special emphasis on thesauri and machine-based systems. Vocabularies for pre-coordinate systems (e.g., alphabetical subject catalogs and classified catalogs) are discussed only briefly to provide historical perspective and for the light they shed on the problems of vocabulary control in general. A full range of vocabulary control possibilities is discussed, from highly structured thesauri and classification schemes to natural-language (free-text) searching. Also discussed are the following: characteristics and components of an index language, creation of index languages automatically, vocabulary in the on-line retrieval system, and some cost-effectiveness aspects of vocabulary control. The book is designed primarily for students of library and information science. (Author)
