  • The Amenability of a Cataloging Process to Simulation by Automatic Techniques. Final Report. Fox, Ann M. Automation Cataloging Doctoral Dissertations Graphs Library Technical Processes Models Simulation This study attempts to determine whether the human intellectual process of cataloging bibliographic materials, using the Anglo-American (AA-1967) and American Library Association (ALA-1949) cataloging codes, can be simulated by automatic techniques. The specific cataloging process is that which concerns selection of entry. Automatic techniques used to simulate the entry process are directed tree graphs. It is the basic assumption of the study that the AA rules of entry are more amenable to simulation than the ALA rules of entry. Measurement of amenability was determined in terms of four criterion variables. With the exception of one variable, measurement did not support this assumption. The directed tree graphs for the two sets of entry rules were tested for their accuracy to assign correct main entries, and their ability to accomplish this assignment automatically. Both tests showed the graphs for the two sets of rules to be highly and equally, or almost equally, accurate and automatic. Findings of the study apply to human application of the graphs. The economic or technical feasibility of the graphs is not considered. (Author)
