contents Guidelines for Legal Reference Service in Correctional Institutions: A Tool for Correctional Administrators. Administrators Bibliographies Correctional Institutions Institutional Libraries Law Libraries Legal Aid Library Collections Library Material Selection Library Services Library Standards Reference Materials Reference Services Recent Federal Court decisions have defined a prisoner's right to access to legal materials as an extension of his right of access to the courts. Correction administrators, recognizing the need for improvement of existing services, but unfamiliar with techniques and material requirements, have asked for help in meeting the new obligation. These guidelines are the results of a seminar (held in May 1972) of experts in the fields of law, corrections and library science. Important items to be considered when planning library services are where to locate, what are staff requirements, should there be photocopying equipment and how will the service be financed. Appended to the guidelines are checklists for minimum and expanded collections and a directory, by state, of libraries offering service to prisoners. (Author/DH)
