Junior High School Students Library Material Selection Questionnaires Reading Habits Reading Interests Student Interests This research project studies the reading interests of junior high school students in a city school in the metropolitan Atlanta area. Four hundred and fifty students--representative of the school population according to grade level, race, sex, and scholastic standing--were given a questionnaire reflecting their reading interests and habits. Responses were weighted to determine preference more exactly. Data from the questionnaire were put on punched cards and fed into an IBM 7094 computer. Some overall conclusions are: Mystery-detective stories seem to be favorites at all levels; Boys and girls differ generally in their first choice of reading interests; White and Black students agree on mystery-detective stories as first choices and generally agree in the next four or five areas of interest; Above-average and average students agree on mystery-detective stories as their first choice, while below-average students favor sports stories; The primary factors influencing students to read are magazines and television movies and programs; Stories of a contemporary nature are favorites among all groups; In general, junior high students read what is currently of interest, with a base of some classical authors. A bibliography, a flow-chart of procedures, and a copy of the questionnaire are included. (Author/SJ) |
