- Basic Training Programme for Library Technicians in Mexico. Vilentchuk, Lydia Curriculum Guides Education Foreign Countries Libraries Library Education Library Technicians Use Studies The Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnologia (CONACYT), set up in 1971 to further scientific and technological advancement in Mexico, commissioned this determination of the steps necessary to promote the use of libraries and recorded scientific and technical information, and to foster the reading habits of the population. A brief overview examines the library network and facilities for library education in Mexico in terms of a need for trained manpower at the library technician level. Recommendations are presented in three groups: (1) short term actions--to alleviate the most pressing needs for trained manpower; (2) long term actions--to standardize the training of library technicians and to achieve recognition of librarianship as a profession, by the appropriate authorities; and (3) long range policy--to influence the general educational system of the country and promote a library and information network which will improve the reading habits of the population and foster the use of information media on all levels. A "Syllabus for Courses in Librarianship Leading to a Certificate of 'Library Technical Assistant' and 'Library Technicians'" and a plan outlining "Immediate Action to be Taken for Implementing an Intensive Training Programme for Library Technicians" are appended.
