Bildman, Joan Lange Books Child Role Childrens Literature Environmental Influences Primary Education Reading Reading Interests Reading Materials Reading Research The purpose of this study was to discover the images of child-adult relationships that are being portrayed in picture-storybooks for children in the primary grades. One hundred picture-storybooks were selected for analysis. Fifty picture-storybooks were selected from recommended book lists and fifty were hand-picked from the shelves of a public library. The criteria established for selection was that a storybook had to present a main theme of child-adult relationships, although other themes could parallel this theme. Each book also had to be published between 1950 and 1970 and had to be suggested for children between the ages of six and nine. Each storybook was analyzed through the use of twenty key questions which dealt with three areas of concern: the image of the six-through-nine year old, aspects of interaction between child and adult, and the interplay of the environment on the interactions. Some of the results indicated: (1) the six through nine year old is more often presented as a member of a middle-class, intact family; (2) storybook children seldom attempt to identify with an adult; (3) the most frequent level of interaction between child and adult is the cognitive; and (4) the environment plays a part in the type of relationship developed between a child and an adult.
