contents The Effectiveness of Microfiche Copies of Trade Books on Selected Fourth-Grade Children's Reading Achievement, Reading Attitudes, and Use of Library Books. Jennings, Robert Edmond Books Childrens Literature Grade 4 Independent Reading Microfiche Reading Reading Achievement Reading Comprehension Reading Instruction Reading Interests Reading Materials Reading Research Vocabulary Microfiche copies of 112 children's trade books and two Xerox Classmate Readers were put into three fourth-grade classrooms to assess their effect on children's reading achievement, attitudes toward reading, the the use of library books. The microfiche copies of the trade books were matched title-for-title with hardbound books shelved with the regular school library collection. One hundred forty-two fourth graders were divided into experimental and control groups. The pupils were allowed twenty minutes daily for independent reading. The pupils could choose to read books of their own, library books, paperbacks, or magazines. The experimental group children had the same choices, plus the option of reading microfiche materials. The children were tested on a pretest-posttest basis to evaluate reading vocabulary, reading comprehension, and attitudes toward reading. There were no significant differences found between control and experimental groups for attitudes toward reading, for reading vocabulary, or for reading comprehension. The main effects of race and the interaction of treatment X race for vocabulary and for comprehension were statistically significant at the .05 level. (Author/WR)
